GRIZ Keeps it All Good with New Album [Review]

The year of 2016 might as well be the year of funk considering the wild musical ride GRiZ has led us on over the past several months. Grant Kwiecinski, Detroit native, has been making serious moves in the electronic music industry over the past few years and amazingly it seems as if he’s just getting started. His record label, All Good Records, is continuously growing and gaining funk-worthy artists that have yet to disappoint. It truly is great to see an artist build themselves up over the years and watch them steady dominate, especially the way Grant does.

We knew this year had big things in store for GRiZ when he graced nine lucky venues with his spring tour titled, “My Friends and I Decided to Come to Your City & Play Some Super Rad Small Shows While I Write My Next Album.” With anticipation of a new album on the horizon, Grant kept us on our toes going into a jam packed festival season. He hit this past festival season harder than anyone I’ve ever witnessed with an impressive count of nine set appearances over the weekend at Electric Forest in Rothbury, MI. Now that the summer has come to an end, Grant has blessed us yet again with the release of the anticipated album, “Good Will Prevail.” The release of this album was so refreshing with a very important theme and outlook on the reality of what is going on around us in the world. To make it even better he’s embarking across the country this fall to spread his message with the Good Will Prevail Tour stopping in over 30 different cities. In order to prep for the tour we’ve broken down the jam-packed album to showcase all it has to offer.

> 1. Wicked Feat. Eric Krasno

GRiZ sets the tone for what’s to come with this soulful build up of a track with Grammy-Winner Eric Krasno.

> 2. Can’t Hold Me Down Feat. Tash Neal

With the powerful voice of Tash Neal and a funky rock-n-roll beat, this track makes a hard hitting statement that everyone should be embracing. Start your day off with this one and don’t let anything get in your way.

> 3. My Friends & I Feat. Prob Cause

Prob Cause has his way with words as GRiZ lays down some dirty drops that will leave your jaw on the floor with this anthem praising the homies; because after all, where would you be without your friends?

> 4. I Don’t Mind Feat. Sunsquabi, Artifakts, and iDA HAWK

I Don’t Mind is a perfect blend of instrumental sounds from SunSquabi and Artifakts paired with Grant on the sax. This combo makes for the perfect funky baseline for iDA HAWK’s soulful vocals that leave you feeling free.

> 5. Good Times Roll Feat. Big Gigantic

The first track that was an early release from the album, is a classic pair up with Big Gigantic that guarantees a good time to follow with funk fulfilling drops full of energy, sax, and soul.

> 6. Feelin’ Fine

Being the only solo track from GRiZ, Feelin’ Fine leaves you feeling just that. This down tempo track is full of blues and funky melodies that carry you on a weightless musical high.

> 7. PS GFY Feat. Cherub

The electro-duo Cherub helps GRiZ bring this saxy tune to life with their catchy vocals telling it how it is with a little explicit message to all the fakes out there.

> 8. What We’ve Become Feat. Cory Enemy & Natalola

GRiZ changes up the tempo a bit with this fresh pop-house collab with Cory Enemy and Natalola.

> 9. If There Ever Comes A Day Feat. Eli “Paperboy” Reed & Louis Futon

This smooth and sultry track is a relaxing soulful ride with the vocals of Eli “Paperboy” Reed.

> 10. Rather Be Free Feat. Muzzy Bear

When Muzzy Bear and GRiZ pair up it’s always a throw down and this one is no exception. This soulful rock jam breaks down so smoothly and then builds right back up for a powerful drop that will set you free time and time again.

> 11. Gotta Push On Feat. Brasstracks & Eric Krasno

This anthem featuring the powerful horns of Brasstracks and Eric Krasno’s second appearance on the album leaves you with so much strength to keep pushing on through whatever your struggles may be.

> 12. Before I Go Feat. Leo Napier

Leo Napier helps set the mood with his soothing vocals overlaying Grant’s serenading sax notes to bring you a head nodding, feel-good tune that will have you feeling alive and well.

> 13. Driftin’ Feat. Son Little

GRiZ sends us on our way by wrapping up the album with this sexy track featuring warm vocals by Son Little that bring about a sense of comfort and bliss.

When assessing the album as a whole, it seems as if Grant has finally mastered his sound, brand, and his message and from that created a loaded 13-track compilation of electronic rock, blues, soul, jazz, bass, and last but not least funk. He obviously didn’t do it alone as he features other artists on all but one track. Featuring fellow All Good Records members, Sunsquabi, and Muzzy Bear along with industry favorites such as Big Gigantic, and Cherub there’s no way this album could have resulted in anything but good. Each track holds an empowering theme promoting perseverance that allows a listener to be able to relate to their daily struggles. It’s easy to say that GRiZ is well on his way creating, doing, sharing, and spreading good in every way possible. We can’t wait to see this amazing album come to life when he makes his tour stop at Mardi Gras World in New Orleans this Saturday October, 21 along with Haywyre and Louis Futon.
