Looking at The Numbers: John Bell Edwards Dominates Orleans Parish, Carries Jefferson Parish

The final results are now available for last night’s close governor’s race of Louisiana. John Bell Edwards defeated challenger Eddie Rispone by about 40,000 votes. The final numbers were 774,469 to 734,128.

40,000 votes are very close in a small state like Louisiana. With those numbers being so close, it’s fun to look at what parishes helped carry John Bell Edwards across the finish line.

In a staggering defeat, Rispone lost Orleans parish by a whopping 101,000 votes. In a city where Rispone openly demonized and did not campaign in, the results showed, with the republican only securing 10% of the vote. It looks like those results carried over to the surrounding parishes as John Bell Edwards won Jefferson Parish,  St. Charles Parish, St. Bernard Parish, St. John Parish.

Baton Rouge also went John Bell Edwards way. The Southern part of the state was a mixed bag for JBE as the eastern part of the state overwhelmingly voted for the incumbent, and the western part overwhelmingly went with Eddie Rispone.

At the end of the day, Rispone could not do enough to sway the state’s two largest cities, his home town of Baton Rouge, and the largest city in our state New Orleans. He also lost areas of the first election that went Ralph Abraham’s way. With JBE only needing to convert 10% of Abraham’s voters, he did just that and then some.
