Whether it’s industry moguls, artists, or fans; we believe every piece is important and an integral part of making this all happen.
For our first #PBTM feature, we asked Taran Cornejo, Grassroots Marketing Coordinator for BUKU Music & Art Project, and Assistant Marketing Coordinator/ Street Team Manager for Winter Circle Productions to share her journey with us.
What was your first step into the industry?
“My friend was an ambassador and needed some help so he made a FB post asking for help on his team. I had no idea who tUnE-yArDs was but I was willing to listen & learn because I was eager to get my hands on something. That was in May of 2014; there’s been a ton of flyering, volunteering, and random gigs all over and now here we are.”
What was your first moment that you knew you wanted to be involved in the arts/music/culture scene?
“Lights All Night 2012 was my first big festival with my “rave” fam that I had met only a few weeks before. I took the plunge and experienced the weekend with mostly strangers that I became closer with in that short weekend than most people I had known for years. It was such a defining weekend in my life. I remember being front row at Zedd and just staring in awe at the crowd and what was happening. I knew that I wanted to make this my life in some capacity in that very moment.”
What has been your biggest accomplishment?
“My biggest accomplishment would have to be being hired by WCP (Winter Circle Productions) in general. It’s such a small company that lucky for me is in a huge growing phase. There was a place for me by becoming this voice for their BASSIK brand that they hadn’t previously had. I don’t even have a marketing degree but I was willing to be taught and very eager to learn anything and everything (I still am). Being hired after a year long internship started a whole new chapter of my life.”
Proudest moment?
“Working with Insomniac’s Ground Control is one of my biggest passions. Every connection I have made with a headliner I have helped has been meaningful for one reason or another. It’s a position I hold very dear to my heart and I think that the work this team is doing is saving lives so every bit of my journey in my purple wings has been a proud moment.
I guess I would say that my proudest moment would just have to be my life right now because it encompasses everything I am involved in that makes me proud. I find myself becoming overwhelmed sometimes with everything on my plate but I stop and remind myself that I am living my dreams. To hear my boss toast at dinner, “Here’s to hoping years from now that we’re still talking successful shows + BUKU’s ,” definitely had me teary-eyed. I could have never imagined four years ago when I got heavily involved in this scene that this is where my life would end up but I am grateful every single day to be doing what I love.”
Who are you listening to right now?
“Hmmm tough one because I LOVE EVERYTHING. All music is good music. But currently in rotation: Chance The Rapper, EMBRZ, Kaiydo, Zeds Dead, Bon Iver, Adventure Club’s Red // Blue, DREAMERS, Have Mercy, ADTR, Mac Miller’s The Divine Feminine. I have been on a huge teen angst kick lately and enjoying the throwbacks from Saosin, Fall Out Boy, Dashboard Confessional, etc. Don’t sleep on Spotify’s curated playlists either – the Brain Food one gets me through my long work days.”
What is your life motto?
“HAPPY AS FUCK (Shoutout Mod Sun). If you are doing what you love, you never work a day in your life. Do whatever it is that makes you happy. I think by being the happiest & best version of yourself, it inspires others to do the same. Wake up grateful. Be positive. Love life. “
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
“I don’t even know how to answer this because in this past year alone I have accomplished more than I could have ever imagined. I don’t know where I’ll be, but I hope to still be crushin’ shit with my friends and loving life just as much.”
Where would you like to travel to?
“Tbh, there isn’t somewhere that I am dying to go to at this point in my life. I have a lot going on so it is hard to even process taking off somewhere for an extended period of time. I want to go where the music takes me. Whether it be for a festival trip for fun or traveling to work an event, that’s where I want to be. “
What is something you are really excited for in the next year?
“From a fun standpoint, I cannot wait for Shambhala’s 20th year. Beyond stoked to return home to the most magical place I have ever been in those beautiful Canadian mountains. It makes me smile just thinking about it. But I think it goes without saying that I’m stupid excited for BUKU 2017. Last year, I was involved with booking and some onsite work but this year I am actually a member of the core team so I am beyond excited!! Crazy to think that this is my life tbh and I am still in shock that I am a part of something I started attending as a fan. The entire BUKU team works day in and day out for everything to come together and I can’t wait for people to experience something we are pouring our heart and souls into.”
