Southern Food + Beverage Museum Opens Special Gumbo Garden

The Southern Food + Beverage Museum is boasted as one of the World’s Top Food Museums.  And the New Orleans staple just finished their latest expansion: The Gumbo Garden.

The 3,200 square feet of garden hopes to evoke the feel of classic New Orleans courtyards. It features rustic brick and wrought iron accents, as well as a garden full of edible plants and vegetables that are native to the American south. Their main dining pavilion of the garden can seat up to 180 guests.

“We want the Gumbo Garden to be one of the best and most unique outdoor spaces in New Orleans, but we also want it to be a true wing of the museum.” – SoFAB President and CEO Brent Rosen

As a food museum, it’s no surprise their outdoor cooking equipment will be out of this world. The garden features a whole-hog BBQ pit built to 1800’s specifications, a gigantic crawfish boiler and a variety of other outdoor deep fryers.

The opening of the Gumbo Garden will also give the museum a chance to strengthen their already stellar programs. Both the children’s cooking programs and the special Meat Sciences Department will get to use the special outdoor cooking equipment. The vegetable garden will also help strengthen the museum’s Sustainable Table initiative.

The garden opens officially to the public on Thursday, October 10th, and entrance to the garden is included with admission to the museum: $10.50 adults; $5.25 students, military and seniors; free for children.
