The Greenway Soirée is This Weekend’s Place to Be

Since March 2014, the Lafitte Greenway has been an integral part of New Orleans’ landscape. The 2.6-mile path provides a space for exercising, economic opportunity, and enjoying the scenery. The corridor had always been a place for commerce, but the connection which developed along the path now goes deeper than business. And it’s a community that sustains the Greenway.

Programing for the public space is done by the nonprofit group Friends of the Lafitte Greenway (FoLG); a membership-driven organization. Although only opened four years ago, the sustainable urban planning of the Greenway has been a goal of FoLG since 2006. In an annual tradition, Friends of the Lafitte Greenway is inviting you to join the family through a special shin-dig. The 7th annual Greenway Soirée happens this Friday, October 4th. The night promises to be full of connection and creativity.

LoFG was formed post-Katrina as the founders were feeling concerns about neighborhood revitalization, long-term city planning, and public space development. With a diverse coalition, LoFG began pushing for the preservation of continuous outdoor space. Early supporters of FoLG saw an opportunity to rethink the city’s landscape in a progressive way. The Greenway was petitioned as a chance to “enhance livability, environmental sustainability, open space equity, and health.” Now, businesses are plentiful, adjacent neighborhoods have direct links, and you can take a hip hop kickboxing class, outside.

The party starts at 6 pm for those who are patrons of Friends of the Lafitte Greenway. In being a member-driven organization, FoLG requires donations by supporters in order to operate. If you have donated in any amount, then you are a member! For non-members, the soirée begins at 7 pm. Wine, beer and spirit store, The Cellar on Saint Louis, will host the event. With a selection like theirs, imbibing is a must. To satisfy those inevitable munchies, restaurants such as Katie’s, Saint James Cheese Co., Piece of Meat, and Dooky Chase (among others) will provide food. And with a feast comes dancing.

The Greenway Soirée features live music from Mario Abney and the Abney Effect, as well as DJ Slick Leo, a legend of the New Orleans music scene. With the excellent curation of food and entertainment, it’s almost easy to forget that the best part of the party is that its right off the trail: no need for an Uber, you can ride your bike.

The Greenway Soirée is Friday, October 4th, 6 pm-11 pm. 2500 St. Louis Street, New Orleans 70119.
