Mark your calendars for an unforgettable night as Charley Crockett, the celebrated “Gulf & Western” musician, takes the stage at the Fillmore New Orleans on Friday, August 30!Known for his eclectic mix of country, blues, soul, Cajun, R&B, and other pieces of American Roots music, Crockett’s sound has been lauded as “very 21st century and very vintage” by NPR Music.
Hailed as a “must-see live performer” by Rolling Stone and a “force to be reckoned with” by CMT, Crockett’s vocal style has been described by the Wall Street Journal as a blend of Ernest Tubb honky-tonk, Bill Withers’ soulful crooning, and the jazzy swagger of New Orleans’ French Quarter. There’s no mistaking his voice for any other artist’s when it comes out of your speakers.
Crockett’s latest album, $10 Cowboy, showcases his storytelling prowess with raw, personal, and vivid portraits of a country in transition. Unlike his 2022 concept album, The Man From Waco, $10 Cowboy emerged from a freewheeling writing process that spanned truck stops, casinos, alleys behind venues, and his truck parked up on South Congress in Austin. “A ramblin’ man like me, a genuine transient, is in a pretty damn good position to have something to say about America,” Crockett explains.
The album begins with the title track, a personal narrative that speaks to the broader American experience. “A $10 Cowboy is a country singer who made himself on a street corner in America,” Crockett says. “But the cowboy way, the cowboy mindset, that applies to anyone who doesn’t feel free, who feels fenced in and bound to something.” As the album unfolds, listeners will find stories of those who hustle to get by, who didn’t fit in, who have slept on couches or the street, and who have ventured from home chasing a new start.
Recorded live to tape at Arlyn Studios in Austin and produced by Crockett and his long-time collaborator Billy Horton, the album captures the magic of live performance with anywhere from 6-12 musicians on each track. “The reason I cut it on tape is, when you get the right folks in the room, great players rise to the occasion,” Crockett says. “When that red light is on and the tape is rolling, you get the magic of a performance.”
Crockett’s previous album, The Man From Waco, was critically acclaimed and named the #2 best country album of the year by Rolling Stone in 2022. The momentum continued into 2023 with Crockett making his NPR Tiny Desk debut, appearing on The Daily Show, and gracing the cover of Texas Monthly in June. He performed at Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl and made his Bonnaroo debut last summer.
