Indulge in Palomas & Tacos Piled High with House-Smoked Meat at this Bywater Spot

Open from Tuesday through Saturday is Galaxie Tacos, located at 3060 Saint Claude Avenue in the Bywater. The eccentric service station turned taco stand continues to offer equally as eccentric taco creations and other Mexico City & Oaxacan-inspired favorites. Everything on their menu boasts freshness, down from the tortillas made in-house using masa, locally-caught Gulf seafood, to their savory house-smoked meats.

At Galaxie, they stick to the roots and basics of Mexican food while supporting local farmers in Oaxaca, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi. They source black beans and corn directly from Oaxaca; the corn is used for their homemade masa for its tortillas. Talk about dedication. View their current offerings and menu here.

THE FOOD

Leading the Culinary team and the menu at the restaurant is Chef Hank Shackelford. The food can best be described as regional Mexican, mixing various styles of preparing meat for their delicious tacos. Due to COVID, their selections are not as extensive prior to the pandemic, but don’t let that stop you because there are plenty of delicious options.

Start your meal with traditional favorites like Guacamole & Chips or Esquites (street corn), or something not-so-traditional like the Grilled Queso & Salsa Verde, think of it as Galaxie’s take on Queso Fundido. Chihuahua cheese is served crispy on the outside and deliciously gooey on the inside, with salsa verde on the side to dip. We loved the Grilled Queso so much that we ordered one to-go!

Enjoy huge pieces of Home Place Pastures pork shoulder in the Al Pastor, house-smoked Angus beef brisket with crema in the Barbacoa, or fresh shrimp topped with equally as fresh ingredients stacked high in the Shrimp (on special, not always available). If meats aren’t calling your name, they do offer a Veggie taco with grilled shiitake mushrooms, avocado, black beans, and local micro-greens.

Other menu items include Open-Faced Quesadillas and a variety of sides to accompany your meal. Sides feature Oaxacan black beans (sourced directly from Oaxaca), popcorn rice, pickles, and fresh tortillas.

THE COCKTAILS

As for cocktails, mezcal is their specialty. Their selection includes over 20 different varieties from different regions. Though to-go drinks are currently not allowed in New Orleans, you can imbibe while sitting in their outdoor patio area!

Other cocktails that are PERFECT for the New Orleans summer heat: frozen Palomas, Huracans, and Margaritas!
