Earlier this month, the Preservation Hall Foundation unveiled Preservation Hall Lessons: a free series of online music lessons for k-12 students co-created by the foundation & members of the Hall’s community of musicians.
Preservation Hall Lessons, designed for digital or in-person use, include content focused on introductory and advanced techniques for the range of instruments in a traditional jazz band, stylistic tips, as well as the cultural and historical context of New Orleans music.
Nothing could replace the experience of a live performance or lesson at Preservation Hall – which has not hosted an audience since March 2020 – but these lessons reflect the spirit and revered traditions celebrated at the Hall by its cherished musicians.
Currently celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the Preservation Hall Foundation protects, preserves, and perpetuates the musical traditions and heritage of New Orleans through music education, community engagement, archive conservation, care for elder musicians, and support for the entire 60-member Musical Collective.
“Preservation hall is committed to celebrating the wisdom of the musicians who perform here for generations to learn and benefit from.”
- Ben Jaffe, Preservation Hall Foundation Board Chairman & Co-Founder
The lesson plans include safe, natively hosted videos, Google Docs and Slides, and various tools and links are provided to support each exercise. This complimentary resource is available for all teachers across the country and applies to all grade levels aligned with National Arts and Common Core standards.
There are currently 22 lesson plans featuring exclusive videos and support materials, with more scheduled for the site in the months and years ahead. Each lesson includes an outline of educational standards addressed, the lesson’s objectives, and how to apply and evaluate that lesson.
