New Orleans vocalist and songwriter Robin Barnes, known as “The Songbird of New Orleans,” has released her debut album, Louisiana Love, a deeply personal project celebrating her ninth-generation Louisiana roots through the state’s music, language, and culture.
Blending zydeco, Cajun and Creole French traditions, New Orleans jazz and funk, brass band sounds, Mardi Gras Indian culture, and storytelling passed down through generations, Louisiana Love serves as both a musical journey and a cultural preservation project.
The album was inspired by a serious health scare in 2025 when Barnes underwent surgery to remove a tumor and faced a lengthy recovery. The experience forced her to confront questions about legacy, family history, and what we leave behind for future generations. For Barnes, the answer became Louisiana Love.
Raised in a family where stories, songs, and traditions were passed from mother to daughter, Barnes felt a growing responsibility to preserve those traditions after Hurricane Katrina and the loss of family elders. The album became her way of creating a living record for her daughters and future generations through music, language, and collaboration.
Louisiana Love features an impressive lineup of Louisiana artists, including Ivan Neville, The Soul Rebels, Big Freedia, Rockin’ Dopsie Jr., Dwayne Dopsie, Cedric Watson, Louis Michot, Jourdan Thibodeaux, Herlin Riley, and Mardi Gras Indian leaders Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes, Monk Boudreaux, and J’Wan Boudreaux.
A Billboard-charting artist whose Songbird Sessions EP reached No. 5 on the Traditional Jazz Chart, Barnes has become one of Louisiana’s most celebrated contemporary performers. Throughout Louisiana Love, she bridges preservation and innovation, honoring the state’s rich cultural traditions while introducing them to a new generation of listeners.
The album opens and closes with Big Chief Sunpie Barnes and the Northside Skull and Bone Gang, drawing inspiration from one of New Orleans’ oldest Mardi Gras traditions. Their presence frames the record as more than a collection of songs; it’s a cultural procession that connects Louisiana’s past, present, and future.
Available now on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, and other streaming platforms, Louisiana Love stands as Barnes’ most ambitious work to date: a love letter to Louisiana, its people, and the traditions that continue to shape its identity.
